Big Bay is wide, sandy, and friendly. Atlantic Surf teaches here for a reason: you get space, safety, and quick wins—without the chaos. Here’s exactly how we run your first lesson, what the day feels like, and how to book.

Why Big Bay Works for First Lessons
Room to breathe. Big Bay is a wide, sandy beach with multiple peaks and a mellow learner zone. That means more attempts per hour and less “lineup traffic,” which is key when you’re learning pop-ups. It’s also family-friendly with restaurants and parking close by, so the whole mission is easy. Cape Town Tourism
Consistent windows. Cape Town’s summer pattern brings a lot of clean, rideable mornings to Big Bay. Mornings are generally your friend—lighter wind, easier paddling, cleaner whitewater. When you’re brand new, those little details add up. Surf-Forecast
Lifeguards, amenities, vibe. Big Bay’s a popular, serviced beach—lifeguards are on duty and the area is set up for ocean sports, which is exactly the environment you want for Lesson 1. Cape Town Tourism
Why Atlantic Surf (Cape Town) Is a Safe Bet
Local, long-running, people-first. We’ve been “Sharing the Stoke since 1995.” That shows up in how we run lessons, how quickly we reply, and how comfortable the day feels. Atlantic Surf
Small groups = real attention. Group lessons run ~5 surfers per 1 coach (or go private if you want it just you + your crew). Small ratios mean faster adjustments and more time actually riding. Atlantic Surf
This is our home break. Our main lesson location is Big Bay (we’ll switch to Muizenberg on request if that’s the smarter call for the day’s conditions). Knowing the banks, rips, and tides is half the battle—your coach will put you in the right spot and keep you there. Atlantic Surf
All ages, all levels. From absolute beginners to “I used to surf—help me get back into it,” through to women’s groups, after-school clubs, and team-building—there’s a clear path from first lesson → packages → rentals → community. Atlantic Surf
How Your First Lesson Actually Runs
Meet up & gear up (Atlantic Surf). We size you for a warm wetsuit and match your soft-top board to the day. If needed, we give you a lift to the beach from our shop at 2 Coral Road, Table View.
Beach brief (5–10 min). Safety cues, how to read the whitewater, and a simple 3-step pop-up. Zero fluff—just what you need to stand.
In the water (50–70 min). We set you in the learner zone where whitewater pushes you forward (less paddling, more standing). Your coach will call your timing, help with board positioning, and fix one thing at a time so you feel steady.
Wrap + next steps (5 min). We’ll recap what clicked, what to try next session, and if you’re keen, we line up a package or rentals so you can keep momentum. Atlantic Surf

When To Book (Wind & Swell Tips)
- Best time of day: Mornings—lighter wind, smoother whitewater, easier paddling. Great for first pop-ups.
- Typical conditions: Big Bay can be punchy when the afternoon breeze kicks; that’s why we aim for earlier slots. If conditions change, we advise the best window or adjust—the goal is safety + fun.
