The art of skimming.

Cape Town beaches are full of ‘wish you were here’ post card moments, from the femme-bots, topless Germans to vendor boys selling granadilla popsicles. If you can find your way through the crowds, you might be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of the sport that’s still ruled by the kids – it’s the water sport known as skimming…or skim boarding as we always called it.

you hear skim board you will be forgiven for thinking Round wooden disc. That’s the way I remember it but skimming there is a lot more to skimming than that.

This boards have evolved out of the round wooden disc we used to skim on the beach to wooden surfboard shaped boards

to high tech fibreglass and carbon skim boards which is used to skim into waves. The riders then do radical turns or aerobatic manoeuvres of the waves.

Aside from realising the speed, timing and concentration necessary. Combining tricks from the street and snow, and since the late ’70s inception of fibreglass boards, skimming has evolved into an extreme sport that grows with every high tide.

This is a subculture determined to keep alive the vibe of the underground – there’s no space here for egos, just plenty of room for fun and adrenalin fuelled good times.

The beach at Table view with its big shore break is a perfect place to practice this sport. It is therefore only natural to stock these boards for those who really want to get serious about this sport.
They are shaped from polyurethane foam with two layers of six once fibreglass cloth on the bottom and three layers on the top and polyester resin to seal the fibreglass.
